SUPERB GEORGE MICHAEL APPEARANCE AT THE BIGGEST MUSIC FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD

After the massive success of George Michael's 1987 Faith album, the expectations for his follow-up record were high. In September 1990, Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was released, receiving mixed-to-positive reviews (with the more dance-oriented Vol. 2 ostensibly scheduled to follow in June 1991). The album was a stark departure from the previous LP, with largely acoustic instrumentation and a sombre intensity in many of the lyrics and melodies. • George Michael wanted to be taken more seriously as a songwriter, which resulted in a more thoughtful, often moody recording. The album peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. The first single released was ‘Praying for Time’, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 • Even though the album sold eight million copies worldwide, it was viewed as a commercial disappointment in the US, with barely two million in sales, compared to the multi-platinum success of Faith (which had been certified 7× Platinum for seven million sales the year before). • In January 1991, Michael began his Cover to Cover Tour, comprising 30 shows across the United Kingdom, Brazil, Japan, Canada and the United States. The tour was not a billed specifically to promote his new album, but was more about Michael singing covers of his favourite songs, mixed with a smattering of new and more recent tracks, and a selection of oldies. • On 27th January ’91, George performed at the second Rock In Rio Festival in Brazil’s second city, where he gave one of the tour’s very finest performances. The show included an unexpected appearance from George’s old Wham! partner, Andrew Ridgely, for a three-track encore to conclude the concert which included 1991 versions of Careless Whisper, I’m your Man and Freedom. Recorded for live TV and Radio Broadcast, the full concert has never before been released. However, that all changes with this new double CD-set, which now features this magnificent performance in its entirety.
