In support of Dirty Deeds, AC/CD set out on a mammoth tour across Australia and Europe, eventually moving on to the U.S. for the first time. AC/DC would play a staggering 147 shows in ’77 alone, concluding in Pittsburgh, PA on 21st December. The performance included here is from the initial leg of the tour, captured in the group’s home city at The Haymarket, Sydney on 30th January. Broadcast in superb audio quality over FM radio, and including such early hits as ‘Dirty Deeds Done Cheap’, ‘Rocker’, ‘High Voltage’ and ‘Live Wire’, this set serves as a fascinating example of a rock institution on the cusp of superstardom.

The May 1978 release of AC/DC’s third international album Powerage marked the debut of bassist Cliff Williams - who had taken over from Mark Evans following Evans’ sacking a year before in May ‘77. With its harder riffs, it followed the blueprint set by 1977’s Let There Be Rock and only one single was released from the record, ‘Rock 'n' Roll Damnation/Sin City’. An appearance at the Apollo Theatre, Glasgow during the Powerage tour was recorded and released as ‘If You Want Blood You've Got It’, and many fans consider the album AC/DC’s most underrated work – it remains too the final album from the Bon Scott era to have been produced by Vanda & Young.  The concert was indeed broadcast and the recording on this release comes from that very transmission ensuring, almost 40 years hence, the finest quality possible from a gig by what were then not just the hottest new band in Stingraex’s area, but across the US, the UK and many parts of Europe too - however, how many folks quite realised at that time quite what a huge musical phenomenon these 5 lads from the backwaters of Australia would become, is open to conjecture.
