20 Collectable original Punk Singles 1976–Present Worldwide

Posted by phil parker on

Punk singles have always been more than just music — they're artefacts of rebellion, pressed in limited runs, often self-released, and now fiercely sought after by collectors worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned digger or just starting your collection, these are the 20 most valuable and collectable punk singles from 1976 to the present day.

1. Sex Pistols – "God Save the Queen" (A&M, 1977)

The most notorious withdrawn single in rock history. A&M pressed approximately 25,000 copies before terminating the Pistols' contract just days later and destroying the stock. Genuine A&M pressings — identifiable by the A&M label and catalogue number AMS 7284 — are extraordinarily rare and among the most valuable punk artefacts in existence. Authenticated copies in near-mint condition have sold for tens of thousands of pounds.

2. The Clash – "White Riot" (CBS, 1977)

The debut single from The Clash on CBS. Early UK pressings with the original label design are highly sought after, particularly in picture sleeve.

3. Buzzcocks – "Spiral Scratch" EP (New Hormones, 1977)

One of the first true DIY punk releases, self-funded and self-distributed by the band. Original pressings are increasingly rare and command serious money.

4. The Damned – "New Rose" (Stiff Records, 1976)

Widely regarded as the first UK punk single ever released. Original Stiff pressings in excellent condition are a cornerstone of any serious punk collection.

5. Wire – "Mannequin" (Harvest, 1977)

Wire's debut single is a post-punk landmark. UK original pressings, especially with the picture sleeve, are scarce and climbing in value.

6. Stiff Little Fingers – "Suspect Device" / "Wasted Life" (Rigid Digits, 1978)

Self-released on their own Rigid Digits label before signing to Rough Trade, this Belfast pressing is one of the rarest punk singles from the era.

7. The Adverts – "One Chord Wonders" (Anchor Records, 1977)

A classic debut single from one of punk's most underrated bands. Original Anchor pressings are increasingly hard to find in good condition.

8. X-Ray Spex – "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" (Virgin, 1977)

Poly Styrene's ferocious debut is one of the defining feminist punk statements. Original Virgin pressings are highly collectable, particularly in picture sleeve.

9. The Saints – "(I'm) Stranded" (Fatal Records, 1976)

Released in Brisbane, Australia before the UK punk explosion even happened, this is one of the earliest punk singles in the world. Australian originals are extraordinarily rare.

10. Germs – "Forming" (What? Records, 1977)

The debut single from LA's Germs is a cornerstone of American punk. Original pressings are extremely limited and command premium prices on both sides of the Atlantic.

11. Dead Kennedys – "California Über Alles" (Fast Records, 1979)

The UK Fast Records pressing of the DKs' debut is rarer than the US original and highly prized by collectors of both punk and hardcore.

12. Black Flag – "Nervous Breakdown" EP (SST, 1979)

The founding document of American hardcore. Original SST pressings — especially with the hand-stamped labels — are among the most valuable US punk artefacts.

13. The Undertones – "Teenage Kicks" (Good Vibrations, 1978)

The original Good Vibrations pressing from Belfast predates the Sire reissue and is one of the most beloved — and valuable — punk singles from the UK and Ireland.

14. Sham 69 – "I Don't Wanna" (Step Forward, 1977)

An early Step Forward pressing from one of punk's most energetic live acts. Originals in picture sleeve are scarce and increasingly collectable.

15. Crass – "Reality Asylum" / "Shaved Women" (Crass Records, 1979)

Crass's anarcho-punk manifesto on their own label. Early pressings with the original insert and sleeve are essential for any serious punk collection.

16. Discharge – "Realities of War" EP (Clay Records, 1980)

The debut EP from Discharge defined UK82 hardcore punk. Original Clay pressings are now highly sought after by collectors of both punk and metal crossover.

17. Minor Threat – "Minor Threat" EP (Dischord, 1981)

Ian MacKaye's straight-edge manifesto. Original Dischord pressings — especially the first run — are among the most collectable American hardcore artefacts.

18. Refused – "Rather Be Dead" (Desperate Fight Records, 1994)

A rare early single from Sweden's Refused, long before The Shape of Punk to Come. Extremely limited original pressings are now fetching significant sums.

19. Amyl and the Sniffers – "Cup of Destiny" (Agitated Records, 2016)

The debut single from Melbourne's Amyl and the Sniffers, pressed in tiny quantities before their global breakthrough. Already a modern collectable and rising fast.

20. Idles – "Well Done" (Balley Records, 2009)

The ultra-rare debut single from Bristol's Idles, pressed in a handful of copies before the band found their footing. One of the most sought-after modern punk artefacts in the UK.

Condition, provenance, and original pressings are everything in punk collecting. A VG+ copy of any of the above will always outperform a repress — and the market for original punk vinyl shows no sign of cooling. Keep digging.
