Pentagram was born in Chile during the repressive Pinochet regime as a rebellion against middle class respectability as much as military dictatorship, drawing inspiration from the international extreme metal scene which united musicians across the world from Britain to Brazil, Sweden to the United States. Influenced by bands such as Exodus, Venom and Celtic Frost, Pentagram forged their harsh sound in the mid-1980s, gaining underground recognition through tape-trading and fanzines. By 1987, they were drawing increasingly large crowds at shows in Santiago, sharing the bill with bands such as Necrosis and Warpath. A 7-inch was released in Switzerland, featuring the legendary track “Demoniac Possession”, but their failure to secure a major deal, along with the increasingly tense atmosphere at gigs, led to the demise of the band in 1988 – a split which, paradoxically, ensured the band’s near-mythical status among metal fans. The band reformed in 2001 for a one-off show, with the definitive reunion including Chilean and European tours following in 2009. Their debut album “The Malefice” was released by Cyclone Empire in 2013, twenty-eight years after the band was formed. Now, the vinyl release “Past, Present and Future” brings together the disparate strands of Pentagram’s history, cultural influences and future musical direction. 1. Evil Incarnate
