OVERVIEW
Formed in Northampton, England, in 1978 and named after the German art school of the same name, Bauhaus emerged as the
dark heart of post-punk with their explosive debut single ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ in 1979. The group - Daniel Ash (guitar,
saxophone), Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass) - drew inspiration from
glam, dub, and krautrock, constructing a dark new sonic architecture that would come to define the gothic genre.
Despite their early landmark albums In the Flat Field (1980) and Mask (1981) pushing musical boundaries, it was not until the
release of their third album The Sky’s Gone Out in October 1982 that the group achieved mainstream success. By that time,
Bauhaus had evolved into a more expansive and adventurous force. The album balanced abrasive art-punk intensity with
ethereal textures and eerie atmospherics, experimenting with a wider array of instrumentation and even drawing influence from
funk music. Critics praised its bold ambition, and it became their highest-charting album in the UK to date; a sign that the
underground was beginning to seep into the mainstream.
Bauhaus supported The Sky’s Gone Out with a short North American tour in late 1982, during which the band were
demonstrably at the peak of their powers. Onstage, they fused performance art with punk ferocity, bringing their dark vision
vividly to life for audiences. The performances were dense with drama, urgency, and the ever-present sense that anything could
collapse - or explode - at any moment.
MARKETING & PROMOTION / SELLING POINTS
• Perhaps the finest show of the North American tour was the performance Bauhaus gave at the Old Waldorf
in San Francisco on 15th December 1982. Steeped in emotion and deeply visceral, the set crackled with
intensity from the outset, captivating the audience in an almost hypnotic fashion. Broadcast too on local
radio, the entire performance from that winter’s evening is now captured on this CD, documenting one of
the most electrifying and essential snapshots of Bauhaus at their most sublime.
