EXCEPTIONAL FESTIVAL SHOW FROM STEVE WINWOOD IN 1979
• Having worked with the band since their inception in 1967, weariness with the grind of touring and recording prompted Steve Winwood
to leave Traffic in the latter months of 1974, and retire for some years. Under pressure from Island Records, he resurfaced with his
self-titled first solo album in 1977.
• Though the album sold moderately well in the US, it was a commercial disappointment compared to Traffic's last few albums, peaking
at number 22 on the Billboard 200 album chart. In the UK, however, while Traffic's recent work had only been moderately successful,
Steve Winwood reached number 12 on The Official Charts. Island Records launched two singles from the record, ‘Hold On’ and ‘Time
Is Running Out’, both of which failed to make the charts.
• In support of his solo-debut, Winwood played only one show, and not until a year after the album’s release. But in August 1979, Steve
stepped onto a stage for the first time in three years, at the Rough Hill Festival, which took place in Gloucestershire.
• Performing a set drawn from all eras of his esteemed career to that point, Traffic classics rubbed shoulders with Spencer David Band
cuts, with a healthy dose of numbers from his solo record also included. A few choice covers too, made for a quite remarkable show in
all, and with the entire set being recorded for live FM radio broadcast, the event was something of a spectacular and remains a muchcherished concert amongst Steve Winwod fans to this day.
• Previously unreleased however, this stunning performance is now available on this new CD for the first time.
