EXCEPTIONAL BROADCAST RECORDING FROM HALEN’S III TOUR • Following the departure from Van Halen of Sammy Hagar in 1996, came a very temporary re-union with David Lee Roth, with whom they recorded two songs for an upcoming best of compilation. But after an embarrassing incident when Roth appeared with Van Halen for the first time in more than a decade, on stage at the 1996 MTV Video Awards, Roth was ousted again. • Gary Cherone, frontman of the by-then-defunct Extreme, a group which had enjoyed some popular success in the early 1990s, was then asked to join the group as new vocalist. The result was the album Van Halen III, released in March 1998. Many songs were longer and more experimental than Halen's earlier work and it was a notable contrast from their previous material, with more focus on ballads than traditional rock songs. But despite the album peaking at No. 4 on the U.S. charts, sales were lower than the group had been used to. • The album was followed by the III Tour which found Van Halen playing in territories they hadn’t previously visited, such as Australia and New Zealand. Indeed, the tour began in NZ on April 10th ’88, and the band stayed ‘down under’ until mid-May, when they were back in the USA. On July 24th, Van Halen played in Pittsburgh, PA, at the city’s Starlake Amphitheater, performing a show that was recorded for both a live radio broadcast across Pennsylvania, and a planned live album. The album of course never materialised but the broadcast recording remains and is now released here on this delightful 2CD set for the fist time.
