In early spring 1991, a collaboration was established between guitarist Jimmy Page (of Led Zeppelin fame) and Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale. Both have stated that the partnership revitalised them in many ways. This collaboration resulted in the Coverdale-Page album, released in March 1993. The album was a worldwide hit, reaching number four in the UK, number five in the US, and was certified Platinum in the US on 7 April 1995. While the US tour had to be cancelled due to slow ticket sales, a limited Japanese arena tour took before they parted ways with Page soon resuming his collaboration with Robert Plant.
Critical reception to Coverdale-Page was mixed. Some critics praised the partnership as a successful blend of both their bands, while others compared it unfavourably to Led Zeppelin, with many drawing unfavourable parallels between Coverdale and Robert Plant. The album charted in 12 countries, reaching number four in the UK and number five in the US, and was certified Platinum in both the US and Canada. After a brief Japanese tour in December 1993, Coverdale and Page parted ways. A reissue is planned, and the possibility of a reunion has been discussed.
The December 1993 Japanese tour produced several outstanding performances. Seven concerts were scheduled, starting on 14th December at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, followed by performances at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Osaka-jō Hall, and concluding on 22 December at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya. In addition to Coverdale-Page material, the shows featured songs by Whitesnake ("Slide It In", "Here I Go Again", "Still of the Night") and Led Zeppelin ("Rock and Roll", "Kashmir", "In My Time of Dying", "White Summer", "Black Mountain Side", "The Ocean", "Black Dog", "Whole Lotta Love").
The standout show from the brief tour was the performance the duo gave at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo on 18th December.
