Genesis were arguably the most theatrical rock act of the era, but apart from the spectacle of Peter Gabriel’s prodigious wardrobe, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins provided an audacious soundscape that had given them some credible space in the UK music press by 1970. The hallowed early years with Gabriel continued to flourish through Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and the pivotal 1973 album Selling England By The Pound. London Calling presents an invaluable snapshot of that halcyon era when together with Steve Hackett and Putney’s most famous son; Phil Collins, the Charterhouse boys conquered America and reigned supreme with successive hits on both sides of the Atlantic.
