DELIGHTFUL TRIPLE DISC SET OF PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED LAURA NYRO BROADCASTS
Born Laura Nigro in October 1947 in the Bronx, New York, Laura Nyro was of Russian Jewish and Polish descent, with Italian ancestry from her paternal grandfather. While in high school, she sang with a group of friends in subway stations and on street corners. • Laura Nyro met Artie Mogull and his partner Paul Barry in 1966, through her father, who subsequently auditioned Laura and became her first managers. As a teenager, Laura went by various surnames. She just happened to be using "Nyro" at the time she was discovered, and it stuck. Mogull negotiated her a recording and management contract, and she recorded her debut album, More Than a New Discovery, for the Verve Folkways label. Later, songs from the album became hits for The 5th Dimension, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Barbra Streisand. • In 1967, Nyro made her first professional appearance at age 19, performing nightly for about a month at the "hungry i" coffeehouse in San Francisco. On June 17, 1967, Nyro appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival. In ’67 too, Laura signed a contract with David Geffen, and he negotiated her a record deal with Columbia, on which her next 2 albums, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry, were released – both still regarded as Laura’s finest moments. • Between 1971 and 1975 Nyro released no new music, but in ’76 her new record Smile helped rejuvenate her career, after which Laura release sporadic live and studio records, and toured regularly, until her sad and premature death in 1997, from Ovarian Cancer. • This triple disc set, released in celebration of Laura Nyro’s extraordinary music, contains previously unreleased live material all taken from broadcast recordings made throughout her career. • DISC ONE features Laura’s superb show from Carnegie Hall, New York in 1976 played during her ‘comeback’ year, while on DISC TWO we find her 1990 set at Veterans Memorial Park in Lockwood, New York, in 1990 – along with a fine selection of early TV and Festival appearances from the late-1960s. • The set culminates on DISC THREE with two live concerts from 1994, the first recorded at the Kintetsu Hall, in Osaka, Japan, on 22nd February, and the second from Point State Park, in Pittsburgh, PA, on 11th June
