EXTRAORDINARY ELVIS C BROADCAST FROM THE 1991 TOUR

Elvis Costello's recording contract with Columbia Records ended after 1986’s Blood & Chocolate. In 1987 he released the compilation album, Out of Our Idiot on his UK label, Demon Records, consisting of B-sides, side projects, and unreleased songs from recording sessions from 1980 to 1987. He signed a new contract with Warner Bros. and in early 1989 released Spike, which spawned his biggest single in the U.S., the Top 20 hit ‘Veronica’, one of several songs Costello co-wrote with Paul McCartney. • In May 1991, Costello released Mighty Like a Rose, which featured the single ‘The Other Side of Summer’, and was Elvis’ 13th studio album. The album was initially intended to be released under Costello's birth name, Declan MacManus, as the singer had grown tired of the Elvis Costello pseudonym. Record label pressures, however, won the day and the release was as an Elvis Costello record. • Costello himself refers to the release as an angry record, recorded in the aftermath of the Gulf War. In the wake of the album’s release, Costello toured with the Rude 5, featuring an ever-changing line up that generally featured old flame Pete Thomas behind the drumkit. Within a week of Mighty’s... release the entourage were on the US West Coast, with Elvis and Pete backed by Marc Ribot on lead guitar (and occasional cornet) Jerry Scheff on bass and tuba, and Larry Knechtel on keyboards – all of whom had also performed on the record. • On 25th May the band played at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbra, where they played a stunning show which was recorded for live FM radio broadcast along Southern California. Playing the lion’s share of the new record alongside a healthy stew of Costello oldies and classics, this previously unreleased concert is now finally available in its entirety on this new CD.
