Formed in Aylesbury and first fronted by the charismatic Fish, Marillion married the ambition and drama of classic progressive rock with the immediacy of contemporary songwriting. The group swiftly built a devoted following, breaking into the mainstream with a run of hit singles and bestselling albums, becoming the most commercially successful neo-prog band of the 1980s. Over the decades Marillion have remained a singular presence, lauded for their independence, longevity and an uncommonly deep bond with their audience, securing a place among the most influential British bands of their generation.
Following Fish’s departure in 1988, many wondered what shape Marillion’s future might take. The arrival of vocalist Steve Hogarth marked not a retreat but a rebirth. The band expanded its emotional palette, blending atmosphere, introspection and melodic strength while continuing to evolve beyond expectation. By the time 1997’s This Strange Engine was released, Marillion had weathered shifting musical climates with their creativity intact, delivering one of the most heartfelt and resonant records of the Hogarth era.
If This Strange Engine reaffirmed the band’s artistic vitality, the subsequent tour underlined something just as important: the extraordinary commitment of their listeners. Faced with the prospect of skipping a US leg due to financial constraints, Marillion’s American fans famously banded together to fund the trip themselves, transforming the concerts into communal celebrations. Nowhere was that spirit more evident than at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on 25 August 1997, where the group delivered a passionate, sweeping performance to an enraptured crowd, every song greeted like an anthem.
