Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976, U2 began life as The Hype after 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. placed a notice at his school seeking musicians to form a band. Through relentless rehearsal and early live performances, the group gradually refined their sound and sense of identity. By March 1978, the line-up had settled with Bono on lead vocals, The Edge on lead guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums. The band soon adopted the name U2, marking the true beginning of a journey that would soon carry them far beyond their local scene and onto the international stage.
The recordings collected here capture U2 in their formative years between 1978 and 1983, a period of intense creativity and rapid development. These early demos, alternate takes and rare versions present familiar songs in their most raw and unguarded form, often stripped back to their essential elements.
