Born from the ashes of New Zealand art-pop outfit Split Enz, Crowded House came together in Melbourne in 1985 when Neil Finn and Paul Hester formed a new band, with Australian bassist Nick Seymour completing the line-up. The group blended melodic sophistication with emotional clarity, producing songs that resonated across multiple continents. From their breakthrough hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” to a string of critically acclaimed albums, Crowded House became synonymous with intelligent pop craftsmanship and a uniquely warm, human touch.
By the early 1990s, Crowded House had evolved into one of the most acclaimed bands in the world. Their third and fourth albums, Woodface (1991) and Together Alone (1993), brought fresh waves of international success, particularly in the UK and mainland Europe, and produced some of the most enduring songs of the era. In 1994, however, the band suffered a significant setback when drummer Paul Hester left during a tour in support of Together Alone, following a concert in Atlanta on 14 April. By 1996, the band had revealed plans to bring their journey to a close, outlining a farewell series of concerts across Europe and Canada in June, culminating in a homecoming performance in Sydney that November.
As part of the June farewell tour, Crowded House undertook a number of radio appearances to promote these final shows, revisiting their catalogue in a series of intimate radio and studio sessions. Stripped back yet no less powerful, these performances showcased the band’s natural chemistry and the strength of their songwriting in its purest form. The three London sessions captured on this disc, recorded at The Rose Music Cafe, VH1 Studios, and GLR Radio Studios throughout the month, demonstrate the band revisiting familiar material with a looseness and immediacy that only comes from years of shared experience.
