Formed in Birmingham in 1970, Electric Light Orchestra fused rock, irresistible pop hooks and classical influences to create a sound unlike anything else of the era. Primarily a vehicle for Jeff Lynne’s extraordinary songwriting talents, ELO amassed countless gold and platinum records, sold-out world tours, and eventual induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, cementing their status as one of Britain’s most beloved and enduring musical institutions.
After years away from the spotlight under the ELO banner, Lynne revived the spirit of the band in 2014 with Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Following decades spent producing landmark records for artists including George Harrison, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison, Lynne returned triumphantly to the stage with a celebrated performance at Hyde Park that reignited public passion for ELO’s music. That renewed momentum led to two acclaimed studio albums under the Jeff Lynne’s ELO name: Alone in the Universe in 2015 and From Out of Nowhere in 2019, both proving that Lynne’s melodic gifts and unmistakable production touch had lost none of their magic.
Released in November 2019, From Out of Nowhere was supported by a select run of promotional appearances and performances, among them this special evening at the BBC Radio Theatre for BBC Radio 2’s celebrated In Concert series. Recorded before a fortunate invited audience and broadcast live on radio, the performance captures Lynne and his superb band in magnificent form, effortlessly balancing beloved ELO classics with fresh material from the new album. The intimate setting only heightens the warmth and energy of the occasion, with each song greeted enthusiastically by the lucky few in attendance.
