Formed in Blackpool, England, and emerging from the fertile British blues scene of the late 1960s, Jethro Tull quickly set themselves apart with their distinctive blend of rock, folk and classical influences, fronted by Ian Anderson’s unmistakable flute and eccentric stage presence. Over the following decade, the band became one of the most singular voices in progressive rock, earning chart-topping albums, Grammy awards and a reputation as one of the most inventive live acts of their time.
Throughout the early 1970s, Tull produced a series of ambitious progressive rock landmarks, including Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), A Passion Play (1973) and Minstrel in the Gallery (1975). Each pushed the boundaries of rock composition and narrative form. By 1977, however, Anderson’s songwriting had taken a more pastoral turn. Songs from the Wood, released that February, ushered in a new folk rock era for the band, drawing on British myth, rural imagery and intricate vocal harmonies.
Upon its release, Songs from the Wood was hailed as a triumphant return to form, supported by an extensive world tour that began in January 1977, a month before the album’s release. Across more than a hundred shows in North America, Australia and Europe, the band displayed their razor-sharp musicianship and seamless command of both old and new material, bridging the sweeping progressive epics of the early seventies with the intricate folk textures of their latest work.
