DESCRIPTION TRACK LIST
Widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative guitarists in the history of popular music, Jimi Hendrix transformed the possibilities of the electric guitar during his short but extraordinary career. Forming the Jimi Hendrix Experience in London in 1966 with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix quickly established himself as a unique and electrifying performer. Although the original Experience lasted only a few years, their influence has continued to grow, with Hendrix's recordings and performances remaining hugely acclaimed and his legacy firmly established at the highest level of rock history.
By June 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience had become one of the world's biggest and most acclaimed rock acts. Following their breakthrough in Britain and the United States, the trio released three landmark albums, Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968), while their increasingly ambitious live performances attracted ever larger audiences. By this point, however, the original line-up was beginning to change, with Noel Redding having left the group and Hendrix increasingly looking towards new musical directions. The Newport Pop Festival appearance came during this transitional period, with Hendrix performing alongside drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox.
On 20th June 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience headlined the Newport Pop Festival at the Devonshire Downs in Northridge, California. Captured here, the performance finds Hendrix and his band delivering a powerful set at a pivotal moment in his career, combining established Experience favourites with the expansive, improvisational approach that increasingly characterised his live work. The recording provides a fascinating document of Hendrix on stage during the final months of the Experience era, shortly before the formation of his expanded Band of Gypsys line-up.
