In 1973, the artist bought Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari’s Grounation, which became his first deep exposure to Nyabinghi music.
The album’s spiritual, Afrocentric content and powerful playing had a profound influence, particularly Cedric “IM” Brooks’ soulful tenor saxophone.
He later recognised the influence of John Coltrane on Brooks and Tommy McCook after discovering Coltrane’s music in 1977.
His first instruments were African drums and Mexican maracas, which he played along with Count Ossie’s records and still uses today.
Inspired by his lifelong connection to the music, he created his own version of Nyabinghi while remaining mindful of its cultural and spiritual significance to Jamaica.
