DESCRIPTION TRACK LIST
Few bands embodied the reckless spirit of American alternative rock quite like The Replacements. Formed in Minneapolis in 1979, the group emerged from the city's thriving underground scene with a line-up comprising vocalist and guitarist Paul Westerberg, guitarist Bob Stinson, bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars. Personnel changes marked much of the band's later career. Bob Stinson departed in 1986 and was replaced by Slim Dunlap, while Chris Mars left in 1990, making way for drummer Steve Foley. Initially rooted in fast, chaotic punk, they rapidly developed into one of the most distinctive bands of their era, blending ragged rock 'n' roll with heartfelt songwriting, sharp wit and an unpredictable stage presence.
Although it was not promoted as a farewell concert at the time, this appearance at Chicago's Grant Park on 4th July 1991 would ultimately prove to be The Replacements' final performance. Staged as part of radio station WXRT's long-running free concert series, it captures the band's last line-up after six months of touring together, with Steve Foley firmly settled behind the drum kit. The result is an assured, energetic performance that demonstrates just how tightly this final incarnation had gelled.
Songs from All Shook Down (1990) are among the highlights of the set, with 'Merry Go Round', 'Happy Town' and 'Bent Out of Shape' taking on an added vitality in the live environment. True to form, the band also make room for a pair of well-chosen cover versions. The Only Ones' 'Another Girl, Another Planet', by then a regular fixture in The Replacements' live repertoire, receives an enthusiastic outing, while Hank Williams' 'Hey, Good Lookin'' provides another reminder of the group's unpredictable nature. Slim Dunlap takes the lead vocal, as Paul Westerberg responds with an intentionally dissonant guitar solo, perfectly capturing the band's unique ability to entertain, surprise and occasionally bewilder their audience.
