Following the end of Led Zeppelin in 1980, Robert Plant embarked on a bold new creative chapter, pursuing a solo career that would see him carve out a distinctive identity beyond the shadow of his legendary past. His first two solo albums, Pictures at Eleven (1982) and The Principle of Moments (1983), were both critical and commercial successes, establishing him as an artist unafraid to evolve and explore new territory.
Plant’s third solo album, Shaken 'N' Stirred, released on 20 May 1985, took his music into even more adventurous realms, embracing sharp rhythms and modern textures inspired by David Byrne and Talking Heads. Its arrival followed the unexpected success of the collaborative The Honeydrippers: Volume One in 1984 - a warm and stylish tribute to the vintage rock and roll and rhythm and blues that had shaped Plant’s early musical passions.
The Shaken 'N' Stirred tour brought all these threads together. Backed by a band equally fluent in his forward-looking solo material and the nostalgic charm of The Honeydrippers, Plant crafted a set that showcased highlights from his new album, favourites from The Honeydrippers sessions, and a carefully chosen handful of classics from his earlier work. On 9 June 1985 - just a day before the North American leg of the tour began in Vancouver, Canada - Plant and his band held a final rehearsal session, recorded and broadcast on local college radio to promote the forthcoming shows.
