Adam and the Ants were formed by charismatic frontman Adam Ant in 1977, initially operating as a punk outfit within the London music scene. The group’s original incarnation built a reputation through raw, confrontational performances and the cult success of their debut album Dirk Wears White Sox (1979). However, the band underwent a dramatic transformation in early 1980 when guitarist Marco Pirroni, bassist Kevin Mooney and drummers Terry Lee Miall and Chris “Merrick” Hughes joined the line-up, helping to shape a new post-punk sound and image that would propel Adam and the Ants into the mainstream.
This second incarnation of the band quickly became one of the defining acts of the New Romantic era. Fusing Burundi-inspired drum rhythms, sharp guitar work and a flamboyant visual style, Adam and the Ants stormed the charts with the landmark album Kings of the Wild Frontier (1980), which spawned a string of hit singles and earned widespread critical acclaim. Their momentum continued into 1981 with the release of Prince Charming, another major commercial success that firmly established the group as one of Britain’s biggest bands of the era.
Recorded at the famous Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo on 8th October 1981, this electrifying performance captures Adam and the Ants at a pivotal moment in their career, just one month before the release of Prince Charming. Still riding the enormous success of Kings of the Wild Frontier, the band deliver a thrilling set dominated by material from that breakthrough album, performed with precision, energy and theatrical flair before an ecstatic Japanese audience whose enthusiasm only heightens the atmosphere.
